Bí Cineálta is our Anti Bullying Policy at Mount Seskin Community College.
We want everyone at our school to feel safe and happy. If any student thinks that they are being bullied or someone else is being bullied, tell a teacher or another adult that you trust. They will know what to do to help.
What is our school mission and why does it matter?
Our school mission is to provide an inclusive learning environment which promotes academic excellence, built on the personal, social and spiritual development of all.
We want to develop confident, creative life-long learners in an atmosphere of equality, justice and respect. This means
- Everyone is welcome
- Everyone is shown respect
- Everyone is cared for and listened to
How do we ensure people know what bullying is?
Bullying behaviour is when someone keeps being mean or hurtful to others on purpose over and over again. We teach students about targeted behaviour, repeated behaviour and what an imbalance of power is. We also teach students about types of bullying and to understand where and when it could happen.
We use Pastoral care with tutors, Assemblies, SPHE class and Religion class to learn about our school value of respect and we teach exactly what bullying is and isn’t.
At the start of every year, students read and agree to our Bí Cineálta Anti-bullying pledge and sign this in their journal, as suggested by our Student Council.
Every month bullying is raised at Student Council meetings & Year Heads do a check in with the year group to remind them also. We mark Anti Bullying week with activities to raise awareness led by the Student Council
What do we do if bullying happens?
When bullying behaviour occurs, our school leaders will:
- Talk with the student and ask the student what they want to happen
- work out a plan together
- talk to their parents
- talk to the other student(s) involved and talk with the other student’s parents
- do our best to ensure the privacy of all those involved
- Help with restorative practice, which is repairing the relationship between students - only if the student being bullied wishes to do this and is ready to
